New development near Texas A&M-San Antonio to have space for housing, retail, trail system

SAN ANTONIO – A new development hopes to breathe new life into the surrounding area of Texas A&M-San Antonio.

SouthStar Communities, a development company, is in charge of the project named VIDA, which will include space for housing, offices, restaurants and retail.

“It will have housing options from multi-family, single-family, detached homes, townhomes, duplexes,” said Thad Rutherford, president of SouthStar Communities.

After 13 years of delays, false starts and legal maneuvers, the effort to develop hundreds of acres around Texas A&M University San Antonio finally got a kick-start from City Council today.

SouthStar Communities of New Braunfels gained unanimous approval to buy and develop land from the Verano group. The project will consist of over 5,700 residential units.
