Memorable, Emotional Day at Vintage Oaks: The Read Family is Finally Home

Colton Read Being Shown the Lot for His Future HomeThis past Wednesday, September 29, 2010, community members gathered for a memorable day at Vintage Oaks at the Vineyard. Senior Airman Colton Read and his wife Jessica were presented with a 1.17 acre lot and the promise of a mortgage-free home in the Bluegreen Community as a gift from numerous companies involved with Operation FINALLY HOME.
It was a particularly emotional day as the Read’s were presented with this amazing gift which was truly a collaborative effort from all that were involved. Presenting the gift was a team of donors led by Dan Wallrath, founder and president of Operation FINALLY HOME. Mayor Bruce Boyer of New Braunfels told the audience that the town has a “long and deep tradition” of honoring members of the armed services. “This is a community of traditional American values.”

Vintage Oaks could not feel more honored to be a part of this movement to provide homes to wounded soldiers. Colton lost both legs after a “botched gall bladder surgery” at Travis Air Force Base in California. Although not wounded in a war, Read was selected by Operation FINALLY HOME because of his commitment to remain on active military duty. Despite the mental and physical suffering incurred by a routine operation gone bad -- which was required by the Air Force to have before his deployment -- Read has remained diligent in pursuing rehabilitation

Attending the ceremony were office personnel of the developer and builders, members of New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, New Braunfels Firefighers-EMT, Spring Branch Firefighters EMT, Bulverde Fighters-EMT and NB Police Department, who formed the honor guard. After the ceremony, everyone had a traditional barbecue dinner catered by Buck & Ozzy’s Last Chance restaurant in Spring Branch; a flag cake that read: “Welcome Home Colton and Jessica.”

It was truly a memorable and touching experience for everyone in attendance and we were so happy to be a part of Operation FINALLY HOME.
