Wounded Army Veteran Presented with a New Home at the Armed Forces Bowl

The weather was dreary and cool but the mood was warm and bright. Football fans from all over gathered at Gerald J. Ford Stadium to watch The Army Knights play the SMU Mustangs in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. They came to see a football game (and what a great game it was), but what they didn't know was they were going to experience the joy of watching the gracious family of a wounded war veteran receive a new, mortgage-free, custom home at The Bridges at Preston Crossings.

History of Land

The Worst “Home Improvements”

Imagine that you build your dream home, customizing it exactly as you want, with all of the features and amenities that you’ve been dreaming of. Then one day, the time comes that you really need to sell it. And you discover, much to your surprise, that apparently no one else in your market shares your tastes. Is it possible to avoid installing home improvements that will ultimately negatively affect your home?

Southern Living recently published an article highlighting the top things to do in the South that are free of charge. Surprising to some, there were hundreds of exciting festivals, museums, tours and much, much more that won’t cost you a dime. Here, we’ve broken down some of the tried-and-true happenings in Texas, Georgia and North Carolina specifically. Our Bluegreen properties including Vintage Oaks at the Vineyard, Havenwood at Hunters Crossing, The Bridges at Preston Crossings, Lake Ridge at Joe Pool Lake, The Reserve at SugarTree, King Oaks, Sanctuary Cove at St. Andrews Sound and Chapel Ridge are all within a short driving distance from these wonderful, free activities. The Best Home Improvements

When you’re custom building your dream home, you have so many different aspects you need to consider. Perhaps one of the most important is whether the features you’re installing in your new home are actually worth what they’ll cost you. While some home improvements may seem like a great idea at the time, it’s also possible that some may backfire, and they may not pay off in the long run.

How Long Does Homebuilding Take?

After you buy a home site in one of our master-planned communities, most people would rather start building sooner rather than later. So, you may be wondering, once we begin building, how long will the whole process last?

How to Budget for Your Dream Home: Part Two

In our last post we discussed four major factors you should consider when building your dream home. Today we’ll follow up with a few more things to think about that play a vital role as you begin your planning.

·The shape of your home. Homes based on squared designs, or on combinations of rectangles, cost much less to build. That’s because angles, dramatic edges and corners cost more in labor fees.

How to Budget for Your Dream Home: Part One

Most people don’t need the benefits of building their dream home laid out for them. The reasons are fairly obvious. The decisions are all yours, so you get to have everything exactly how you want. But people often aren’t aware of the tradeoffs this approach also introduces. For example, it’s often more costly to build than to buy an existing home. Fortunately, Southstar Communities is here to help you think through designing your dream home, and to give you some ideas about managing the costs associated with the process:

Buying Raw Land vs. Buying Bluegreen Land

Southstar Communities purchases raw land and develops it for our specific purposes. We’ve been doing this for a long time. We analyze the property and investigate all the possible risks, and we’re skilled and experienced at anticipating and addressing any problems a particular property may present. Before a single stake goes in the ground, our team of researchers thoroughly studies every property in advance, making sure it’s exactly the land we want for our next unique Bluegreen Community. Then, when it’s ready, we’re excited to share it with you!

Once Southstar Communities has purchased the land, that’s when the real fun begins. That’s when our team of professionals begins surveying the property, laying out and designing the development to perfectly complement the terrain and its features. Finally, when everything’s ready, we begin construction. Bluegreen brings in the utilities, paves the streets, plans and builds the clubhouses and requisite neighborhood amenities. We even survey the land to plan out the homesites, drawing from our experience and expertise to make sure each and every lot will afford its eventual residents the best views possible.

Happy Holidays from Southstar Communities!

Texas Hill Country Holiday Shopping Experience

Holiday shopping is typically a frenzy for most people this time of year, but as always, last minute shoppers need to check names off of their list without running into traffic, long lines and the typical headaches that come with waiting until the last minute. The Texas Hill Country has some of the most unique shops, outlet malls and boutiques that will guarantee everyone on your list gets what they want this year.

For vintage and one-of-a-kind finds, the Gruene area is the Hill Country's best. Known for the Gruene Market Days and the Gruene General Store, this town has a lot of personality and history to offer. Visit the General Store to indulge in a float at the soda fountain, some fudge in the candy store or pick up some Country Style Preserves for your loved ones. For finer antiques, you can stroll over to the Gruene Antique Company and browse 8,000 square feet of collectibles.

The area is also home to two premier outlet malls - San Marcos Premium Outlets and Round Rock Premium Outlets.

San Marcos Premium Outlets house high end outlet shops such as Gucci, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Barney's New York, Brooks Brothers and Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth. However, there are also plenty of other stores if you are not in the market for high-priced goods. You can read a list of them here.

Round Rock Premium Outlets are another option for holiday shoppers and the shopping center will be having an after Christmas sales event going from December 26 to January 2, 2011. Round Rock has more budget friendly stores such as J Crew, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Gap and Michael Kors. Read a complete list of stores here. Round Rock is also home to 50 Plus Shopper Perks. Every Tuesday, if you are at least 50 years of age you can take advantage of an added 10% savings by simply presenting a photo identification with your proof of age to the cashier at participating stores.

After shopping, come on by one of our properties at Vintage Oaks at the Vineyard in New Braunfels and Havenwood at Hunters Crossing near Gruene. The beautiful sunsets and majestic views will have you feeling relaxed and pampered in no time! You can also stop by Dry Comal Creek Vineyards (across from Vintage Oaks) for a post-shopping wine tasting.
