The weather was dreary and cool but the mood was warm and bright. Football fans from all over gathered at Gerald J. Ford Stadium to watch The Army Knights play the SMU Mustangs in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. They came to see a football game (and what a great game it was), but what they didn't know was they were going to experience the joy of watching the gracious family of a wounded war veteran receive a new, mortgage-free, custom home at The Bridges at Preston Crossings.
During halftime, Southstar Communities was pleased to award this special holiday gift to Army Specialist Hugo L. Gonzalez, his wife, Any, and three lively young daughters. The Gonzalez family flew in from Florida without any idea of what was to come and they were completely caught off guard. Dan Koscher, President and CEO of Southstar Communities, and Dan Wallrath, Founder of Operation FINALLY HOME, were more than happy to gift this new home to the deserving Gonzalez family, and they can't wait to break ground on the home as soon as February.
Any Gonzalez was in utter shock of the news and could not fight back her tears of joy. Holding on to her daughters, she walked side by side with her husband to receive this amazing gift. Army Specialist Gonzalez valiantly said, "I feel so honored to represent this generosity to the military and I need to keep representing all of the wounded soldiers." He was wounded in the Iraq war back in 2004. Today he is partially blind after his Humvee was attacked in Iraq but he thanks his wife for his recovery. "She is my true heroine. Without her, I don't know if I'd be here," said Gonzalez. It was a truly memorable day for all who were a part of it and this is just the beginning. The family plans to relocate to Texas over the next year and can't wait to enjoy all that The Bridges at Preston Crossings has to offer.
