New Braunfels community honors Veterans with park and memorial walkway

(June 27, 2015—NEW BRAUNFELS)  Area veterans, local elected and community officials and residents of the Vintage Oaks community in New Braunfels honored Veterans today by dedicating a new park and memorial walkway.  Timber Ridge Park and Veteran's Walk is a 23-acre community park situated at the heart of the community on an open valley with long views to the surrounding Hill Country and crowned by a grove of heritage oak trees, some over 300 years old.

“This park represents a tribute to the area’s veterans and service men and women who risk their lives every day for freedom,” said Thad Rutherford, Chief Operating Officer of SouthStar Communities.  “Vintage Oaks is home to many retired military from across Texas and the country.  Nearly 40% of our residents have served or are serving in the military. Many retired veterans are returning to the San Antonio area from other parts of the country to have easy access to Veteran’s services.  They remember the beauty of the Hill Country and find a welcome home here at Vintage Oaks. We want to thank our servicemen past and present, and add an important monument to our community to show that they are remembered.”

The park offers serene spaces for reflection and enjoying a quiet, scenic retreat in the Hill Country.  Beneath the oak trees, a commemorative stone pathway features the names of honorees, dedicated by the residents and owners at Vintage Oaks, some dating back to the Revolutionary War.  Honorees have their name, rank and service time engraved into worn limestone to walk guests from the entry to the base of the oak grove.  Benches and seating are available to enjoy the silent reverence of the park as well as walking trails and a 10-acre wildflower sanctuary.  The park is the newest amenity to Vintage Oaks, considered one of the area’s most amenity-rich communities in recreation and gathering spaces.

“As a homeowner in Vintage Oaks, it is beautiful to see our community come together and honor our fellow veterans,” said J.R. Martinez, U.S. Army veteran and property owner of Vintage Oaks.  “This park creates a place to honor and remember our veterans and for us all to reflect on the price that is paid for freedom.”

The park is a mix of a wildflower field and a naturally terraced hilltop, shaded by the oak trees.  A natural dry creek bed meanders across the park and walking trails add to the miles of trails currently at Vintage Oaks.  The park is a short walk to the community Clubhouse and Pools.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bill Brown Elementary Cub Scouts Pack 808.  Texas Senator Donna Campbell’s office presented a proclamation to SouthStar Communities recognizing its service to veterans. At the end of the ceremony, guests spread wildflower seeds to dedicate the park and Veterans Walk.

With its close proximity to military hospitals and bases in San Antonio, Vintage Oaks has long been recognized as a favorite Hill Country community for active military and retiring veterans.  Awarded “fastest growing community” two years in a row by MetroStudy, Vintage Oaks is one of the largest sources of Veteran Land Board loans in the state of Texas.  Its veteran population is growing each year and SouthStar Communities, the developer of Vintage Oaks, has provided four one-acre homesites in Vintage Oaks for Operation FINALLY HOME wounded veterans and 11 homes in Texas.  For more information on homes and homesites at Vintage Oaks, visit www.vintageoakstexas.com.
